Outcome:largely successful – caused major international press coverage, significantly raised awareness, Senate hearing, court denied defendants motion to dismiss, and dismissed First Amendment argument (meaning chatbot is a product under law and co-founders of character.AI are defendants) – all these details are covered here: https://www.humanetech.com/case-study/litigation-case-study-character-ai-and-google – in October 2025 character-ai announced it would restrict chat for under-18s – in January 2026 character.ai settled (as part of a wider group of cases that were settled at same time – reiterating commitment to safety) although by this point it seems to have become a class action lawsuit?). Although as it didn’t reach a final verdict we cannot say that the claim was upheld by courts and still the question of whether chatbots are products or ‘service delivery’ – which carry different legal liabilities – and the question of free speech – all haven’t been determined yet in a final court ruling, so this piece argues we should expect plenty more lawsuits to come – hence largely successful.
